Dato che sono cavi (nel senso di &#8216;bucati&#8217;, vuoti all&#8217;interno), permettono di incanalare i raggi del Sole  verso la pelle dell&#8217;animale, e quindi anche il calore. In questo modo,  ogni orsetto &#8211; che vive costantemente immerso in una temperatura media  di -40 gradi centigradi &#8211; riesce a scaldarsi un pochino.
