Bioethics: the European Tower of Babel

Prof. Alexandre MAuron
Direttore dell'Istituto di Etica Biomedica dell'Università di Ginevra

Prof. Alexandre MauronThe beginning of life and the end of life mark two very contentious areas of bioethical discussion.
One involves the perennial debates about the ethical standing of prenatal human life.
The other concerns practices at the end of life such as withholding and/or withdrawing life supporting treatment, euthanasia, and assisted suicide.
No common European position on these issues is forthcoming, and one may ask why.
The "easy" answer is that such discrepancies reflect profound disagreements between European peoples on these issues.
I wish to discuss an alternative view, namely that these differences mostly originate with the very diverse ways in which bioethical and biopolitical debates are conducted in different countries.
The example of Switzerland and its idiosyncratic treatment of assisted suicide will be presented.
